Image Creation, Management, and Registry
A production service must always run exactly the same image bytes that passed testing, even if someone later pushes a new image under the same tag. How should the image be referenced in the service definition?
By the latest tag
By a tag that includes today's date
By its content digest, for example myrepo/api@sha256: followed by the digest
By the image ID shown in docker image ls on the build machine
C
A digest is the SHA-256 of the image manifest, so a reference by digest is immutable: the registry can only return content that matches it. Tags, including latest and date tags, are mutable pointers that a later push can move, and a local image ID cannot be used to pull from a registry.
